It’s A New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It seems like only yesterday that we were telling one another Happy New Year and setting our goals for 2016. Yet, we’ve already reached the halfway mark for January, and February is merely 8 days away! I cannot believe how quickly the time is passing and how much has already happened. I turned 25! (dear Lort, lol); I made the very grown up decision to leave a job that I was unhappy with and got two amazing job offers–I only applied at these two places; and then made the even more adult-like decision to take the job that would offer more experience, flexibility and bank –almost double what I was making before!

As all of these wonderful things come into fruition, I know that there will only be more to come, and God is simply preparing me for the type of year and life he has planned for me. I’m ready for my hobby to become my career; I’m ready to be in the healthiest, most fit shape of my life; & mama ain’t no beggar, but I’m definitely down for a male companion/boyfriend/hubby/all of the above! Haha! But seriously, guys??

But in preparation for all new things, the old habits have to go and changes must be implemented. Change isn’t change until you change. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You know that, I know that, but it none of it matters if we don’t act upon it.

Philippians 4: 6&7 (NKJV)

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Let your heart and mind be guarded. Put your trust in God and allow him to guide your footsteps. Every day, the intent must be there:

Work Harder

Grow Stronger

Eat Better

Pray Longer

Live YOUR life to the best of YOUR ability and do everything with and in love!

I hope you guys are enjoying the new year and making every effort to make every day the best day of your life. Be sure to stay in touch this year and we’ll keep each other motivated and encouraged on this journey!

In other news, I celebrated my 25th in Atlanta! If you wanna see what we got up to, be sure to watch the video below and subscribe to my YouTube channel for future vids 🙂

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip Review

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip Lipsticks

colourpop, colourpop ultra matte lip, lipstick, matte lip, makeup, beauty

For years, I played it safe when it came to wearing lipstick. The boldest I would wear was red–and I don’t consider that very bold because everyone rocks a red lip from time to time. But lately, I’ve been adding some variety to my makeup collection and purposefully wearing more colors. I didn’t have many options on hand, so I decided to see if the company everyone was raving about would live up to the hype. The Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip liquid lipsticks and “lippie” stix were all the rave in the YouTube & Instagram communities.

Left to Right: Guess, Tulle, Midi, Chilly Chili, LAX

The colors that I purchased are listed below, along with pictures of how they’re advertised and snapshots from my video. I also included a few selfies from when I wore the colors out. I’m pretty impressed! Most of the colors look great and offer a true matte finish– I get compliments every time I wear them. My favorite would be LAX, a burgundy that’s great for the winter months. My least favorite would have to be Midi, but I should have looked at the color more closely before purchasing it. It’s a summer color and definitely not suited for my skin tone. But as ridiculous as it looked, the longer I had it on, the more it grew on me.

I also shot a YouTube

, going into more detail about the colors, why I chose them and my advice on how and when to wear them. If you guys have any questions, please let me know! Or, if you’re familiar with Colourpop and their other products, let me know about those. I’m thinking of trying their lippie stix and eyeshadows. As always, stay flawlessly beautiful and live in love!

Was NBC's 'The Wiz Live!' Too Black?

The Wiz Live!

If you guys didn’t know, The Wiz Live! premiered on NBC last night. It was a new adaptation of the 1975 Broadway musical, The Wiz’, a more soulful version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, starring Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, Diana Ross, and Richard Pryor. I haven’t watched The Wiz Live! yet, but I heard it was great. The musical featured well renown rapper, Common; Glee’s Amber Riley; Uzo Aduba, from Orange Is The New Black; singers, Ne-Yo & Mary J. Blige; actress, Queen Latifah; and several others.

Because I didn’t watch the show I wasn’t attentive to its trending comments on Twitter. But today, I watched Philip DeFranco’s video on Facebook entitled: “If You’re Offended By This I Hate You” –and my guy makes a valid point.

I tend to steer clear of racial discussions because no one enters into the conversation with the intent to understand; they only want their one-sided opinion to be heard. This is a prime example of that.

“OMG Black people would be so upset if there was an ‘all-white’ Wiz.”

the wiz live, the wiz, nbc, black people, black media, white media, black lives matter, philip defranco

Are these people not watching television? Have they not been watching television since its existence? I’m not the biggest BET fan, because quite frankly the channel sucks now, but there is a reason it exists. Robert L. Johnson created Black Entertainment Television because there were no other networks aimed at African-American people. I don’t care what anyone says, people need something to relate to. There’s no need for segregation and exclusion, correct; but people need to feel as though they are a part of the masses. & not to get into anything, but it’s the reason that statements like “Black Lives Matter” is relevant. It’s because somewhere along the way, someone made them feel as though they didn’t…or that they mattered, but not as much. Although I don’t post the hashtag on Twitter or Facebook, I get it–I recognize its purpose. And that’s the major problem, people refuse to believe that discrepancies exist. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a beautiful movie, but it was released in 1939, long before Black people were showing up in prominent roles on television– especially as something positive, or hopeful, or imaginative. Viola Davis made that speech because in all of the 67 years that the Emmy Award has been awarded, this was the FIRST year that a Black woman won. That’s nearly seventy years, guys.

For someone to even think of saying that there should be an ‘all-white’ Wiz means that they’re clearly delusional. Or maybe they’ve never actually seen The Wizard of Oz?

If you guys are interested in watching the show in its entirety, it’s linked above. I’ll be sure to check it out and you should too. Maybe then you’ll see why this version was just as wonderful as the original!

Graze Box Review (Unboxing)

Graze

grazebox, health, healthy snacks, food, nature, graze

I am always looking for the next healthy thing to get into, whether it be recipes, gadgets, health tips, or easy, on the go, snacks! So, I was very excited to try out the Graze Box. These guys will box up a few healthy snacks each month and send them to you in the mail for only $11.99 each. They work with small suppliers that provide great quality food, and use a taste team and nutritionist to create recipes with the best vitamins and minerals for healthy snacking.

grazebox, health, healthy snacks, food, nature, graze

As you can see, the snacks come prepackaged in cute little plastic containers, which are then sectioned off into an adorable, environment friendly box. My first box came with four snacks and the second box featured eight brand new snacks. Graze boasts a range of over 100 snacks to ensure that each box can be customized to your taste. After trying a few, I’d say the box is worth it. It’s something easy to check off the to-do-list, and if you toss these into your lunch box, you don’t have to worry about buying those chips and candy from the vending machine or gas station. One thing that I should mention though, is that although they taste delicious, it may be an adjustment to some of your tastebuds. Everything taste really great, but you also notice that it’s healthier. On the plus side, it’s pretty filling!

Here are a few of the snacks that came in my second box.

grazebox, health, healthy snacks, food, nature, graze, caramel apple
Caramel Apple: caramel sauce with soft apple pieces
grazebox, health, healthy snacks, food, nature, graze, walnuts, vanilla pumpkin seeds, fudge
Vanilla Walnut Fudge: walnuts, vanilla, pumpkin seeds, fudge & rasins

New Skincare Routine: AMBI Products

Having clear skin is not only attributed to a great daily skin care routine, but largely to what we eat, our water intake, how much sleep we’re getting and how much we’re exercising. I’ve asked several people, who have seemingly flawless skin, what their secret is and they always credit their lifestyle first. So many of them drink very few sodas, if any at all, tons of water, and they exercise. Unfortunately, I’m already starting in the negative, as my diet is so wishy-washy. I know that what I currently eat contributes to my random breakouts, and eliminating unhealthy, processed foods from my diet could stop those.

I’ve never had much of an acne problem, just breakouts related to poor eating habits. In middle school–even as a fit dancer, I might add–I would have at least one can of Sprite and a Snickers or Twix bar A DAY! Because of that, I would get random pimples or tiny bumps across my face; when I didn’t eat those things, the breakouts didn’t occur. The same thing applies present day–my body always lets me know when it’s fed up with me. To be honest, it wouldn’t be a big deal but I am always picking at everything! If I see something, blackheads, whiteheads, redness, anything, my first instinct is to try to squeeze it away; but, that’s exactly what you shouldn’t do! The only time you should try to rid yourself of a pimple is when it has a whitehead; and when you attack that sucker, it should be with a q-tip. Our skin is oily, our pores are open, and our hands are dirty. You should try to keep your hands out of your face as much as possible. But because I didn’t following this advice, I have dark scar marks. These can fade away naturally by using cocoa butter or shea butter, but it may take longer.

If you guys remember my recent LUSH post, I was trying their exfoliating wash and fading cream. I wasn’t a fan of the results, so I reverted back to a product I used in high school and college. The quality of the above photographs aren’t great, but hopefully you can tell that my skin was pretty clear. I had very few scarred marks, and because I ate healthier, it remained clearer longer. At the time, AMBI was a major part of my skin care routine; it helped fade my scarred marks and even out my skin tone. I think it worked pretty well and I saw results fairly quickly. The only negative is that the products aren’t natural. The fading cream doesn’t smell great, but that’s because you can smell the alpha hydroxy acid–aka the agent that helps with discoloration.

ambi, skincare, facewash, fade cream, black women, black skincare, women of color, beauty tips

AMBI is targeted towards women of color, and as they stated “designed for melanin-rich skin.” I purchased three items:

  • the Even & Clear Exfoliating Wash, which helps to remove dead skin cells, clear skin of pimples and breakouts, and promotes even skin tones;
  • the Even & Clear Daily Moisturizer, a lightweight moisturizer with soy and vitamins C & E, that helps to even the skin tone and reduce discolorations;
  • and the Fade Cream for Normal Skin, which helps to fade dark mark, while maintaining the natural skin tone (I should have gotten the one for oily skin).

In addition to the AMBI products, I also use Equate’s Makeup Removal Wipes as a pre-cleanser on makeup days. If you’re interested in seeing what that looks like, I’ve linked my YouTube
video
below.

My journey toward healthy, clear skin is an ongoing process, but I’m sure this will be a great start to that. If you guys have any tips or products that you love, please write about them below. Until next time!

Morning Smoothies: Blueberry, Banana & Spinach

I love morning smoothies! They’re refreshing, clean, easy to make and good on the go! You can make a great smoothie with just a couple of items or by throwing multiple ingredients into the mix. This morning, I made a blueberry, banana, and spinach smoothie. Most days, I choose the bag of mixed frozen fruits for more of a tropical taste, but sometimes I’m looking for something sweeter, less tangy. And I’m sure you guys are familiar with fruit smoothies, but tossing a leafy green in allows you to add a boost without forfeiting the flavor. Sometimes, I’ll even make a smoothie with 3/4 spinach and 1/4 frozen fruit– it’s just still wonderful, just not as sweet. When choosing additives, I always go for flaxseeds and chia seeds. I haven’t looked into other things, but I started with these because they help with weight loss. For more info, I’ve listed the ingredients for this particular smoothie below and some of their many health benefits*.

blueberries, spinach, chia seeds, flax seeds, healthy, get fit, bananas, lynella, morning smoothies

Ingredients:

1 cup of Frozen Blueberries (fresh ones are okay)

Blueberries are great for weight loss, as they are high in dietary fiber. They’re also great for healthy digestion, fighting wrinkles, maintaining healthy bones, lowering blood pressure, managing diabetes, improving mental health, warding off heart disease, and preventing cancer.

1 Medium Banana

Bananas help with lowering blood pressure, asthma, combating cancer, supporting a healthy heart due to the levels of fiber, potassium, Vitamin C, and B6, diabetes, preserving memory, and boosting your mood.

Handful of Fresh Spinach

Because spinach is a dark, leafy green, it’s great for the skin, hair, and bones, and it provides protein, iron, vitamins, and minerals. Helps manage diabetes, prevents cancer, asthma, lowers blood pressure, promotes regularity (so pooping!), and bone health.

1 tsp. of Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are a great source of dietary fiber and help to protect against cancer, lower cholesterol, and improve blood sugar levels.

1 tsp. of Chia Seeds

Looking to boost your fiber intake? Chia seeds can help with that. These guys help with weight loss, digestion, detoxing, cardiovascular disease prevention, cholesterol, and lowering diabetes risks.

Ice (few cubes)

Water (1/4 ways upward?)

1 tbsp. of Honey

If any of you give this a try, let me know how you like it. & for those of you that are already drinking tons of morning smoothies, let me know some of your favorite recipes!

White After Labor Day.

You can’t wear white after labor day! Um, says who? I know there are some people who choose to abide by all of the “rules” of fashion like, not mixing black and browns, only wearing pastels during the spring, restricting boots to the fall and winter months and of course, not wearing white after labor day! Well, I say fashion is whatever you make it.

I wear what I want, when I want and I could care less what anyone else thinks. If you see a girl rocking a winter beanie in the 90 degree weather, it was probably me–a quick solution to bad hair days. Plus, the fashion industry is constantly changing what they perceive to be acceptable, in or out. And quite frankly, ain’t nobody got time for that!

I say if it looks good & you feel good in it– wear it!

Sunday Attire: Part II

Two outfits in one day, yes people I’m on a roll! HAHA! So you know how I talked about the simple and classic Sunday attire? Well, here is a more casual outfit that’s still Sunday Best appropriate. As much as I love the fall & winter, Louisiana is way to hot for tons of layering. So you better believe that if there’s a hint of wind and the weather drops below 75 degrees, I’m searching the closet for my boots and sweaters! Here, I layered a cream cardigan and chambray shirt, being sure to push up the sleeves for affect. And I paired it with a new leopard print skirt and some of my favorite bootie heels. To accessorize I added cream and gold jewelry, some older pieces from BRFS, and my rose gold MK watch. I’m still playing with the styling of my hair, so it’s just a dry, chunky twist out.

Sunday Attire: Part I

Sunday’s Best is what some like to call it. Probably because they’re headed to church and it’s the one day they get to “show out.” Well I don’t know about showing out, but it has always been the standard in my house to dress up on Sunday mornings. Sunday attire means no jeans or tee shirts, no shorts or short skirts, and no tennis shoes or sweats. Of course, Jesus says come as you are, but you know…tradition and all! So, I pull out my fanciest attire and play dress up for the day! Granted, the older I get, the more I’ve learned to bend the rules when it comes to fashion by mixing and matching styles as often as possible. But sometimes, I keep it simple and try to be as classy as possible.

Oh & I cut my hair again!!!

The Sibling Tag!

Hola beautiful people! How’s it going?

Do you guys remember that lovely little lady I introduced you to months ago? My smaller, cuter, more genius mini-me–don’t tell her I said that, lol! Jokes. But yes, some of you may have guessed correctly; I am referring to my little sister, Sharani! If you need to refresh your memory, check out this post.

To close out our summer–really, her summer–she joined me in my new video The Sibling Tag . Now to be fair, we do have an older sister and I will be doing a video with her, but she doesn’t live with us and wasn’t around at the time. I was sure to give her a cameo, though 😀

Anyway, if you’d like to see my personality up close and hear some accent slippage, check out the video below! If you like it, be sure to give the video a thumbs up and share it! & if you’re feeling really fancy, subscribe!
